Mr. Bushyhead Riddle

I really like riddles.  They are fun, even if you didn’t figure them out on your own.  I especially like riddles that make sense, and are logical.  Here is one of my favorite riddles.  I will post the answer in a few days.

Mr Bushyhead was driving through a strange town when he decided to stop, park his car  and get a haircut. He asked a boy where he could find a barbershop.

“We have only two barbers in this town.” said the boy.  “One of them has a shop at the north end of main street and the other has a shop at the south end.”

Mr Bushyhead walked north on main street until he reached one of the barbershops.  It looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned in months.  Cut hair was all over the floor.  The barber himself needed a shave and his haircut looked terrible.

Mr Bushyhead walked in the other direction until he came to the second barbers shop.  It looked neat and cheerful inside.  The floor had been swept.  The barber was neatly dressed, freshly shaved, and had a neat haircut. Why did Mr Bushyhead walk back to the first barbershop to get his hair cut?

Good luck!  See you next time!

Tell Us Tuesday 5

Yesterday’s question was your first 24 Game question.

The solution is:

(4 – (9 / 9)) * 8

Following order of operations, the first thing that you do is nine divided by nine which equals one, so,

(4 – 1) * 8

Next take the one away from the four, to get three.

(3) * 8

Three multiplied by eight equals twenty-four.

3 * 8 = 24.

Great job!  See you next time!

Mathy Monday 5

Today the Mathy Monday question is a game:  the 24 Game.

You take four numbers and try to get them to 24.

You can only use those numbers, exactly once each.  You can only use multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.  Here’s an example:

4, 7, 8, 8,

(7 – (8 / 8)) * 4 = 24

And here is your question of the day:

9, 4, 9, 8

Good luck!

Narnia

Narnia is a seven book series by C. S. Lewis.  The most famous book in Narnia is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but all of the books are very good.

Last week we went to a Narnia themed party, where we dressed up as characters from Narnia, ate Turkish Delight (which is really good, by the way), and watched the movie, among other things.

From left to right:  Prince Caspian, Glimfeather, Aslan, Lucy, Mr. Tumnus, the Stone Lion Edmund doodled on (me!), Ramandu’s Daughter, and the White Witch.

I’ve only read six of them, but my favorite of the ones I’ve read is The Magician’s Nephew.   I especially love the wood between the worlds, it gives me so much to think about.  The Magician’s Nephew is the first book in chronological order.

Although my favorite is The Magician’s Nephew,  I think that if you only read one Narnia book it should be The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.  That is because when most people think of Narnia, they think of this book, it is a classic.

Narnia was made into two sets of movies, by Disney and by BBC.  I do not have a preference, but I think that you should see BBC Narnia first because it was made first.

One of my favorite songs was based off of the Disney Narnia movie.  It is called Remembering You, by Steven Curtis Chapman.  You should listen to it, it’s good.

Narnia!  Read it, watch it, watch it again, listen to it, enjoy it!  See you next time!

Easter Chocolate Nests

Every year, at Easter time, we make nests out of chocolate at least once.  Perhaps you’ve had them before.  You take melted chocolate, mix it with crushed shredded wheat cereal, press it into cupcake tins, add a couple chocolate eggs, and eat them.

The only downside is that is uses a whole box of shredded wheat, the most popular cereal in my house.  So today, my brother had a great idea.

He suggested that we use uncooked ramen noodles instead of shredded wheat.

I laughed at first, but Dad said it sounded good so we tried it.

It was amazing!  Ramen noodles work really well.  They don’t have the same texture as shredded wheat, but they still hit the spot.  I think that we have a new Easter tradition.

Next time you’re feeling adventurous, make ramen nests!  You’ll be surprised.  See you next time!

Tell Us Tuesday 4

Yesterday’s question was:

5 + 5 + 5 = 550

and you had to make that true by adding one line.

The answer is a little bit silly, and don’t feel bad if you didn’t get it because I didn’t either my first time.

Well there you have it.  Turn the plus sign into a 4 and there’s your answer.  545 + 5 is 550.  See you next time!

Toffee Sauce

Yesterday my Dad and I made Sticky Toffee Pudding, and it was the best thing I have ever eaten.  The cake part itself was long, complicated, and hard, but the Toffee Sauce for the top was easy and the yummiest.  Seriously, it was amazing.  So I have to share it with you.

We put the sauce on top of Ginger Date cake,  but really it could go with anything.  So far I’ve thought that it would taste good on shortcake (or normal vanilla cake without frosting), vanilla ice cream, and apples.

So here’s the recipe you’ve all been waiting for.

You will need:

  • Two sticks of butter
  • One cup of sugar
  • One cup of heavy cream
  • One teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • An assistant (actually very important)
  • a pot
  • a stove
  • a whisk
  • a spoon or two
  • Self control (seriously.  If you want to have any left to use)

Okay, now to make it.

  1. Stir the butter and the sugar in a pot on medium heat until it is light brown.  (if you taste it, it is already really good.  It tastes like caramel.  But be careful, don’t burn your tongue.)
  2. As soon as it is slightly brown call in your assistant.  Tell them to get the cream and vanilla ready, then have them pour it in.  This is the crazy part.  It will bubble like crazy, and steam, but you have to whisk it constantly, without dropping it on anyone’s feet.
  3. Keep on low heat, and keep whisking until it sticks to the back of your spoon.  Then it is done.  Taste it, it is amazing.  But still hot, so still be careful.

YUM!!!

Well, now you have officially made the best food in the world.  Have fun!  See you next time!

Top Trumps

Top Trumps is a card game similar to WAR, but way more fun.  There are lots of decks, from the US presidents to predators to Shopkins.   My sisters and I love Top Trumps.  I have The US presidents and countries.  I would say three things about Top Trumps:

  1. They are educational.
  2. They are travel-friendly.
  3. And they are fun.

The way you play Top Trumps is this:

Each card has 5 categories, the different categories depend on what deck you’re playing.  To start, you divide the cards among the players.  Then the first person says what category they choose and what number they have for that category.  For example, I might say:  ” Ronald Reagan.  Year took office 1981.”  Then the other people I’m playing with would say:  “George Washington.  Year took office 1789.” and “Barack Obama.  Year took office 2009.”  Barack Obama wins, so that person collects all three cards and chooses the next topic for their next card.

The player who gets all the cards wins.  This game can go on for a lllooonnnggg time, or it can be done in minutes.  It is kind of a game of chance, if you happen to get bad cards and you never get to pick a category, but it is also a game of skill, because you have to know which categories are high compared to others.

I highly recommend this awesome card game, Top Trumps.  Play it on every long car ride, and you’ll never be bored again.  (and depending on the deck, you’re actually learning important stuff!)

See you next time!
