The Young Pages

A few technical details about our website

TheYoungPages.com first came into existence in early September 2004, around the time our first daughter was born. At that stage it was completely designed using Microsoft FrontPage, as I didn't know any better. Over the years I have tried to wean the website off FP, but have always run into problems. Due to Microsoft deciding to no longer support FP and development of Expression Web, the general problems I have encountered using our website on web browsers other than Internet Explorer, and the likelihood that my web server will stop supporting FrontPage extensions at some point, made me rebuild our entire website.

I basically kept the format the same, but moved towards a more web-standards compliant website. Hopefully things work for you as they should regardless of your viewing situation. For your interest, I do most of my coding using VIM (which I basically use in "easy" mode - i.e. I keep it in Insert mode all the time).

I design my website for Opera (Windows), but have so far viewed it in Internet Explorer7, and am happy with how it looks in these. Let us know if you have any problems. I have not tried our website at all on "the mobile web" and imagine that it breaks down completely when viewed on mobile phones, PDAs, etc. I would also like to try it on Opera-DS (the Opera web browser for Nintendo DS) and Opera-Wii (for the Nintendo Wii), but do have access to either of these. All of the pages I wrote, including CSS (but not Gallery pages or blogs or javascripts) have been validated using the W3C Markup Validator.

The bulk of the website of course is our photo galleries. These formerly used FrontPage's inbuilt works-only-in-IE gallery, but I have now moved to using Gallery2. Hopefully it works well with you. Apologies for the videos. Historically these were always MS WMV movies, which did not work for people without Windows. I am investigating suitable alternatives. The weblogs are powered by WordPress.

I think that covers most of it. Thanks for visiting, and I hope that you enjoy it, and find it easy to use. I would appreciate any advice you can give me about the website, particularly to clean up the code even more. I will try to take it graciously :)
